My story

From overweight kid to obsessive coach.

Two decades obsessing over the same question: why does the science say one thing and the public hear something completely different?

I grew up in a household full of boys and a household full of books. A family that always encouraged thinking, debate, and challenging assumptions. I played every sport going (boxing, GAA, football, rugby), but I was always the overweight kid.

At 12, I made the connection between food and bodyweight. I started reading everything I could find in the local library, even the diet books written for women, because I wanted to understand the actual mechanism, not the marketing.

That obsession never went away. I joined a gym at 15, got hooked on "solving the puzzle" of training and nutrition, and at 18 pulled a 200kg deadlift at 85kg bodyweight. Natural, when nobody around me was lifting anywhere near that without help.

But I quickly realised I couldn't tell which advice was right and which was wrong. So I went back to college, learned to read research properly, and then enrolled again to study biochemistry, because biochemistry underpins everything. Without it, you're just guessing.

The journey, in milestones
Age 12
First saw the link between food and bodyweight
Started reading every nutrition book the local library had, even the ones aimed at housewives. Most kids were watching cartoons. I was working through energy balance.
Age 15
First gym session with a friend
Designed our own programs because I'd read more about training than anyone we knew. We had no idea what we were doing, and somehow got results anyway.
Age 18
200kg deadlift at 85kg bodyweight
Drug-free, in an era where almost nobody was lifting that kind of weight without help. That's when I realised most progress claims in the industry weren't grounded in reality.
Early 20s
Worked the gym floor for years
Spent over 10 years coaching in person before ever taking on online clients. I still think every coach should. You learn things on the gym floor you can never learn from a textbook.
Mid 20s
Met Dr. Gary McGowan in a Facebook debate
We argued about NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) on a bodybuilding thread and ended up co-founding Triage Method, built on the idea that science and practice should never be in different rooms.
Late 20s

Already coaching full-time, I went back to university because biochemistry is the substrate underneath every nutrition, hormone, and recovery claim. I needed to read primary research without flinching.
