From overweight kid to obsessive coach.
Two decades obsessing over the same question: why does the science say one thing and the public hear something completely different?
I grew up in a household full of boys and a household full of books. A family that always encouraged thinking, debate, and challenging assumptions. I played every sport going (boxing, GAA, football, rugby), but I was always the overweight kid.
At 12, I made the connection between food and bodyweight. I started reading everything I could find in the local library, even the diet books written for women, because I wanted to understand the actual mechanism, not the marketing.
That obsession never went away. I joined a gym at 15, got hooked on "solving the puzzle" of training and nutrition, and at 18 pulled a 200kg deadlift at 85kg bodyweight. Natural, when nobody around me was lifting anywhere near that without help.
But I quickly realised I couldn't tell which advice was right and which was wrong. So I went back to college, learned to read research properly, and then enrolled again to study biochemistry, because biochemistry underpins everything. Without it, you're just guessing.
