Sleep
Expand your knowledge of all things sleep!Â
Get better results, faster.
Sleep is one of the fundamental pillars of health, yet it remains one of the most neglected and misunderstood aspects of well-being. While most people recognise that sleep matters, understanding how to consistently get quality sleep and maintain healthy sleep habits proves remarkably difficult for the majority of people.
Sleep often feels frustratingly elusive to optimise because there’s an overwhelming amount of conflicting information out there. From wellness influencers promoting their sleep hacks, to researchers, medical professionals, and sleep gadget companies all offering different advice. Figuring out how much sleep you need and how to actually achieve it can feel daunting.
It’s also easy to see why some people might think sleep is straightforward; after all, it’s something we do naturally every night, and the immediate effects of a poor night’s sleep are obvious. But the long-term consequences of your sleep patterns run much deeper and can either strengthen or compromise your health in ways that aren’t always immediately noticeable. Unfortunately, many people fall into the pattern of relying on quick fixes like sleeping pills or weekend catch-up sleep, rather than developing a genuine understanding of how to support their body’s natural sleep processes for life.
To address sleep issues, many sleep specialists focus heavily on the clinical science of sleep architecture and circadian biology, forgetting that people need practical solutions that fit into real, busy lives. Effective sleep practices aren’t just about hitting a specific number of hours or following rigid bedtime routines; they’re about creating a sustainable approach that enhances your overall health and actually works with your lifestyle for the long haul.
The goal of this sleep page is to provide you with a comprehensive resource to help you understand how to support your body’s sleep needs effectively, using evidence-based information and current sleep science, while remaining firmly rooted in reality. Our goal isn’t just to tell you when to sleep, but to help you understand why certain sleep practices benefit you and how to integrate them into your daily life. We want to equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions about your sleep, so you can develop a consistent, healthy sleep pattern that suits your individual circumstances and lifestyle.
We believe that empowerment through education is essential for long-term success with all aspects of health and fitness. Most people only experience sleep improvement through temporary interventions or restrictive protocols, which often lead to frustration and minimal lasting results. Without a foundational understanding of sleep science, it’s easy to fall for the latest sleep trend or become confused by contradictory recommendations. This typically results in unsustainable habits and, ultimately, little progress toward your health objectives.
Our aim is to help you develop a sleep strategy that you can sustain for life. By understanding the principles of sleep, you’ll be better prepared to make modifications as circumstances change, ensuring that your sleep habits continue supporting your overall health, even as your life evolves. With a solid grasp of sleep fundamentals, you’ll be less susceptible to sleep fads and more capable of making choices that genuinely benefit your long-term health.
This is exactly how we work with coaching clients, because our ultimate goal is for them to no longer need us once coaching concludes. We want them to be self-sufficient, and the only way to ensure that is by making sure they understand the principles underlying sleep health. They don’t need to become sleep scientists, but you’d be amazed at how much progress you can make with just a fundamental grasp of sleep principles.
This page is part of our fundamentals series, where we house our content on the key pillars of building “your best self”. Being your best self means you are able to engage with the world how you want to engage with the world and ultimately, accomplish the goals you have in life. Regardless of what that actually looks like for you, if you can get the pillars set up correctly, you give yourself the best opportunities to accomplish everything you want to in this life.Â
The foundations of the broader society you find yourself in also matter, as do the genetics you were born with or the biology you were born with or acquired (your “biology” could change due to accident or injury, for example, you may have become paralysed, and thus your “biology” has changed), as does your mental and spiritual health, and of course, the health of your local community and support systems. However, much of the foundations are out of our active control, but we can work to set up the pillars as best we can, given the circumstances we find ourselves in. On this page, we discuss nutrition, but we do also have pages on exercise, nutrition and stress.Â
If you want more free information on nutrition, you can follow us on Instagram, YouTube or listen to the podcast, where we discuss all the little intricacies of exercise, nutrition and health. We also offer coaching if you need help with your own exercise program or nutrition. If you don’t understand something, or you just need clarification, you can always reach out to us on Instagram or via email. Case Studies
Sleep is tricky, and while you can spend a lot of time building out your foundational knowledge, sometimes you do just need to see things in action. Case studies are a phenomenal way to see how to deal with specific challenges, and how to adjust sleep hygiene protocols accordingly. You may have a client dealing with a specific issue, or you may have a specific issue yourself, and seeing a case study on the topic can be really helpful in at least pointing you in the right direction with things.
