Health Effects of Pantothenic Acid (B5)

Function

Pantothenic acid (B5) is a component of coenzyme A (CoA), which is essential for fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, citric acid cycle function, and synthesis of steroid hormones and neurotransmitters.

Deficiency Signs

Pantothenic acid deficiency is extremely rare due to its widespread occurrence in foods. Experimental deficiency causes fatigue, headache, sleep disturbance, and burning feet syndrome.

Excess / Toxicity

No adverse effects reported from high intakes. No UL has been established. Very high supplemental doses may cause diarrhea.

Absorption & Interactions

How It’s Absorbed

Absorbed in the small intestine via the sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter (SMVT). CoA and 4-phosphopantetheine from food are hydrolyzed to free pantothenic acid before absorption.

Key Interactions
Biotin (B7) Inhibitor
Shares the SMVT transporter with biotin; extremely high doses of one may theoretically reduce absorption of the other
