Many people can successfully lose weight, but few can maintain it. This is one of many reasons why learning to simply maintain your body composition is a very valuable yet often overlooked skill.

In this episode, we cover 4 scenarios in which one would wish to prioritise finding their maintenance point:

1) The Beginning: When you wish to begin gaining muscle or losing fat, finding the level of calories and/or activity at which you maintain your current body weight can allow for more effective decisions.

2 / 3) Post-Weight Loss / Post-Gaining: Whether your goal has been to lose or gain weight, there are multiple reasons why you would benefit from a brief period of maintenance before seeking to now gain or lose weight. Doing so may help you really solidify the behaviours and habits that got you there, and make the journey in the opposing direction a little smoother.

4) Lifetime Maintenance: The fitness industry can seduce you into thinking that you always need more (or less). Whether it be more muscle or strength, or less fat, it’s easy to forget your initial reason for trying to get fit, which can lead you astray. For many people, learning to simply maintain their current body composition would actually be the biggest win for their long term health and wellbeing.

Paddy Farrell

Hey, I'm Paddy!

I am a coach who loves to help people master their health and fitness. I am a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, and I have a degree in Biochemistry and Biomolecular Science. I have been coaching people for over 10 years now.

When I grew up, you couldn't find great health and fitness information, and you still can't really. So my content aims to solve that!

I enjoy training in the gym, doing martial arts and hiking in the mountains (around Europe, mainly). I am also an avid reader of history, politics and science. When I am not in the mountains, exercising or reading, you will likely find me in a museum.
