Mortality in Congo, Dem. Rep.

The mortality profile of Congo, Dem. Rep. reflects its epidemiological position within the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Like many countries at a similar stage of development, the leading causes of death in Congo, Dem. Rep. are shaped by a combination of lifestyle factors, healthcare access, environmental conditions, and demographic structure. The balance between non-communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular disease and cancer) and communicable diseases (such as respiratory infections, HIV, and malaria) varies based on Congo, Dem. Rep.'s income level, urbanization rate, and public health infrastructure.

Understanding Congo, Dem. Rep.'s Health Landscape

Congo, Dem. Rep. sits at a particular point along the demographic and epidemiological transition — the shift from high mortality driven by infectious diseases toward chronic and non-communicable conditions. This transition influences the overall disease burden, life expectancy, and allocation of public health resources. By examining how death rates have changed since 1990, researchers can identify which interventions have been most effective and where gaps remain.

Cancer & Risk Factors

The cancer type breakdown reveals which malignancies are most prevalent, while the risk factor attribution section identifies the behavioural, metabolic, and environmental factors driving mortality. High blood pressure, high blood sugar, high BMI, smoking, and dietary risks consistently rank among the top contributors to premature death globally, though their relative impact varies substantially between countries.

Data Sources

All mortality and risk factor data comes from the IHME Global Burden of Disease 2023 study, processed by Our World in Data. Demographic data is from the World Bank and United Nations Population Division. Living indicators are compiled from WHO, World Bank, FAO, World Happiness Report, and NCD-RisC.

Rate methodology: Countries with detailed mortality registration display age-standardised death rates (ASR) per 100,000 population. Countries without detailed registration display estimated crude death rates derived from IHME cause-of-death share percentages combined with UN demographic data. Crude rates are not directly comparable to age-standardised rates, as they are influenced by the age structure of the population. Estimated data is marked accordingly throughout the page.
